Acivir contains Aciclovir as the active ingredient which is an anti-viral drug used in the treatment of systemic herpes infections and viral infections of skin and eye.
Aciclovir is converted to aciclovir triphosphate by the viral thymidine kinase. Aciclovir triphosphate works by competitively inhibiting viral DNA polymerase and competes with the natural deoxyguanosine triphosphate for incorporation into viral DNA after which it inhibits DNA synthesis by acting as a chain terminator.
