The term used for the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon is called Colitis. Clostridioides difficile also known as Clostridium difficile (klos-TRID-e-um dif-uh-SEEL) and often referred to C. difficile or C. diff by a medical professional, is a bacteria that can be the cause of normal diarrhoea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. There are different types of colitis categorized by cause. The causes of the inflamed colon can be due to infections, poor blood supply, and parasites.
If you are a patient with an inflamed colon, you are likely to have abdominal pain, cramping and diarrhoea.
Sickness caused by C. diff mostly affects adults in the hospitals or to the people in the long-term care facilities and especially occurs after the use of antibiotics medicines. However, studies show that the numbers of people with C .diff infections increasing in the young and healthy individuals, who have not used antibiotics and who have not been in a health care facility.
Yearly, the half of million people get ill from C. diff, and in the recent years, the number of C. diff people are increasing and have become more frequent, dangerous, and difficult to cure.
Though there are different types of colitis with different causes, the symptoms are the same:
Like mentioned, there are only a few different types of colitis that can cause colon inflammation.
Infectious colitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites that are found thorough the environment including soil, air, water, human, animal faeces and processed meats. Some healthy people carry bacteria in their large intestine, naturally, and don’t have ill effects from the colon infection.
However, others with infectious colitis will have diarrhoea and fever, a stool sample that tests positive for enteropathogens including Salmonella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli (E. coli).
Infectious colitis may be contracted from contaminated water, foodborne illness, or unhygienic habits.
Another type of infectious colitis is Pseudomembranous colitis. It is also often called antibiotic-associated colitis or C. diff colitis. It is often caused by the use of antibiotics that interferes with the balance of healthy bacteria in the colon.
Several conditions seat under the IBS umbrella, but, the following are the two main types:
Ischemic colitis is caused when the blood flow to the portion of the colon reduces. This type of infection stops the cells in the digestive system from getting the oxygen they require.
Ischemic colitis is normally caused by narrowed or blocked arteries. People above 60 have higher cholesterol, or a clotting disorder have an increased risk for Ischemic colitis.
Ischemic colitis can harm any part of the colon but usually, a patient feels pain on the left side of the abdomen. Pain can develop gradually or can occur happen suddenly.
Pain in the right side may indicate blocked arteries to the small intestine resulting cause necrosis of intestinal tissue which is life-threatening and required urgent surgery to clear the blockage.
Allergic colitis is mostly seen in babies than in adults, affecting 2 to 3 per cent of infants. This type of inflammation is an allergic reaction to the proteins found in cow’s milk. Baby with colon may be irritable, gassy, and have blood or mucus in their stools. Anaemia and malnutrition can also happen if it is serious.
Eosinophilic colitis is similar to allergic colitis. If eosinophilic colitis happens in infant, it usually resolves by early childhood. But if it happens to adolescents and adults, the condition is often dangerous. The exact cause of eosinophilia is sometimes unknown, though the protein found in cow’s milk mostly makes symptoms worse. Family history of allergies and asthma appear tends to have higher risks.
Some medicines like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been linked to the inflamed colon in some people. Old people and people with a long-term history of using NSAIDs tend to be at a higher risk for developing drug-induced colitis.
Several measures can be included to stop the spread of the C .diff which includes the following:
